The Glocal Story

Anita Looking LovelyThe idea of "greater good" living was something that Anita found strangely absent from most of the parenting sites she visited after our son Robbie was born. Instead, she found resources that encouraged parents to protect their children from the ugliness of the world or to unreservedly invest in the individual development of the child. From what Joe and Anita have seen, this results in children being ill-equipped for reality, either because they're disconnected from it or too self-indulgent for it.

Instead, Joe and Anita have set out to raise a globally-minded child. Rather than protecting Robbie from the world, they are seeking to expose him to all that it offers ... the good, the bad, and the ugly. But it isn't careless, rather, they are introducing Robbie to the world on their terms, which gives them the opportunity to help him process what he experiences and guide him in his decision-making. This choice gives them the to opportunity to make sure that the impact of his choices on others, especially others who are either suppressed or oppressed, is part of the equation. Because our model of parenting wasn't coming through in any of the existing resources, and because we were certain that we weren't alone, Anita decided it was time to offer an alternative voice.

Joe looking way cooler than he isThen one night as they were driving home from Joe's parent's house, Anita was talking about needing a name for the podcast. Joe popped off with the word glocal ... but he didn't stop there. Rather, he suggested that they cohost the show and make it not just about parenting, but about life as a glocal family. Within minutes of arriving home they'd purchased the glocalfamily.com domain name and Joe had dove head first into his world of geeky goodness. The rest is becoming history.

So, who are Joe and Anita? They're broken but redeemed, child-sponsoring, community serving, continually re-connecting, dairy-free, educated but forever learning, fair-trading, globally-conscious, gluten-free, holistic health practicing, home schooling, increasingly green, Mac-loving, neo-traditional, progressive thinking, world traveling, urban parents from Denver, CO who are seeking to raise a glocal child.
