Being Green

In this tip of the week Anita turns crayons into, well, crayons. Okay, not really, actually, she is turning all those broken bits and pieces of crayon into crayons that are shaped like letters of the alphabet. This not only maximizes the use of the individual crayons, but it provides a fun and educational new way for kids to color.

As a bonus tip, when it comes time for a birthday party, give all the kids that come a bag of crayons that spell out their name.

Door to Door Organics delivers fresh organic produce and groceries throughout Colorado, Michigan, and the East Coast. This week, we were thankful to have the companies new president, Chad Arnold join us for an interview.

Living in the mountains of California, Chad learned an appreciation for fresh food, which eventually lead to his participation in a local CSA. He worked at Yosemite National Institutes (now NatureBridge) initially as an intern, and eventually as an executive director. In 2005 Chad moved to Boulder to pursue his MBA at the Leeds School of Business. Since then, he has been a business consultant and C-level executive to small- and high-growth companies in the fields of solar energy, biofuels, manufacturing, battery materials and web technology. He's is an active board member of the Thorne Ecological Institute and is excited to be a part of Door to Door Organics where, in his own words, his "job is to help Door to Door Organics grow stronger as well as bigger."

The other day Joe received a package in the mail. Given the contents and the packaging, the whole thing made him go, "Augh!" Here he is expressing his frustration and asking for solutions on how to fix the problem.

For our first interview on the Glocal Family Podcast, we had the opportunity to sit down with Earth Day Founder John McConnell (click here for his wikipedia profile and here for the International Earth Day Site).

Given his 94 years, John is surprisingly sharp, although his mind does seem to jump from topic to topic at times. In our interview he shared his thoughts on the faith behind his life of peace activism, the founding of Earth Day, and his other projects.

This week Joe and Anita talk about something better than recycling ... reusing! That's right, we explore how get the most benefit out of existing resources, before we ship them off to become something else.

Along the way we talk about why reusing beats recycling, have an interview with Zwaggle founder Adam Levy, and share a few of the ways we reuse in our home, including the introduction of a tip that makes use of all those tiny bits of crayon.

But this isn't all about us, rather, we realize that you, our listeners, have lots of reusing ideas to share, and we want to encourage you to do so in the comments section on this post, with best comment receiving a prize from Milkshake music.

As we've said before, at the Glocal Family, we're talking from a place of learning and seeking to discover how we can live a life that serves the greater good. In part this means dealing with our own clutter, managing our lives better, and figuring out how we can be green.

One of the ways we've decided to accomplish all of these things at once, is setting up a resource recovery station in our home. It's going to be a single location that we use for our trash, recycling, and a new edition, in-home composting. The journey is just beginning, but here's part 1.

As I mentioned in the previous Glocal Cam, Anita and I are reorganizing part of our dining room so we can add a "resource recovery station". Here's glimpses into the process as we rework our storage setup, unclutter our lives, and make feel important all at once.

Here's a couple more pictures of Robbie as helps out:

This episode, I talk about implementing a recycling program at my office.

There are a few toys that every child has that seems to be their mainstays. These are the toys that are played with, week in and week out, while most of the others go untouched with a few specific exceptions. In our episode this week, we suggest that you get rid of toys that aren't mainstays, and in our tip of the week, Anita offers a few examples of how you can create those "occasional toys" out of trash.

A few days ago Joe was standing in the shower shaving when he realize how much water was being wasted in the process ... a moment that prompted him to wonder about other patterns in his life.

Welcome to the first episode of the Glocal Family Podcast! In our initial episode we give you an introduction to the format of the show, link you to a site to scrap phone book delivery, let you know why we have a song, tip, and recipe of the week, and flesh out two of our convictions ("Others Over Self" and "Think Globally, Act Locally") through an interview with Earth Day Founder John McConnell and a discussion on scrapping old cars for fuel efficient ones.

This week on the Glocal Family Podcast we offer some of the reasons people should live glocally, that is, live lives that serve the greater good. Along the way we have conversation with Vicky and Jen from vickyandjen.com, we talk about a contest on Twitter Moms, and we pass on info about a great homemade bread mix and how to make homemade diaper wipes.

So, did we miss any reasons to be glocal? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Zwaggle is a national network (sorry non-US folk) of parents who have come together to share ... well, at least that's how it started out, because if you visit the site now, you'll find that there are plenty of non-parenting items exchanging hands through zoints, the sites official currency.

In this interview, Joe sits down with Zwaggle founder Adam Levy and talks about the site, how it came about, and how you can maximize resources through Zwaggle.

If you want to join Zwaggle, please send an email to the Glocal Family and we'll send you an invite, in the process we'll receive referral zoints that will get sent on to charity here in Denver.
